Right now, if you search for Bankaroo in the App Store, you’ll only find the “student edition”:
The “family edition” is no longer there. The Bankaroo website has a link to the app, but you’ll get the error “This app is currently not available in your country or region” if you follow it:
So it seems like the developers have removed it from the App Store? We can only speculate as to why, but I suspect that they haven’t updated the app to run on newer iPhones. As such, they were forced to remove it.
Why wouldn’t they update the app? Well, in January 2023, they posted a notice on their website saying that the business would shut down in September 2023. However, this notice has since been removed, but an archived copy can still be viewed on the Wayback Machine:
It is now January 2025 and the service hasn’t been shut down. Have they changed their minds? Who knows.
I checked their Facebook and X accounts, but they lay dormant. Latest update was 2019:

The Android app is still available in the Play Store, but it took over 30 seconds to load when I opened it. I just sat there staring at their kangaroo logo:
I think it’s safe to say that the developers have lost interest. They’ve left the service running, but aren’t putting any effort into supporting it. That’s sad. Bankaroo was the first app that my family used after we graduated from spreadsheets. At the time, it was great.
We eventually moved to RoosterMoney, which was better. However, it has also recently been removed. After trying a few different apps and not getting satisfaction, I made Bomad. If you’re looking for a Bankaroo alternative, please give it a try.
