My favorite Bomad feature is debit card support. Kids love it because it makes them feel all grown up. It still surprises me that so few families use it.

It works like this: you get a debit card for your child from a real bank. The easiest way is probably to open a separate savings account in your name at your current bank, and then give your child the new debit card.

Adding the card to Bomad is easy. You can even upload a picture.

When your child wants to spend on the debit card, they request that you move some of their Bomad money to the card like this:

You’ll get a notification from Bomad about the request, and then you’ll have to transfer the money from your bank account to the card and confirm in Bomad.

If you’re too slow like me, you’ll get a notification from your child too 😉

If your child doesn’t have a device with Bomad, you can just do the transfer in Bomad yourself.

Of course Bomad can’t show you how much money is on the card, but it can show a history of transfers:

Doing things this way has made Bomad much more real and fun for my family. Kids want to do what adults do, so they’re keen to use a debit card, just like Mom and Dad. They enjoy feeling like grown ups.

My daughter often loads some of her money onto her card and goes on a spending spree around town. We get a few notifications from the bank about where she’s been spending, and then a final “insufficient balance” notification 🤣

Thankfully the majority of her money is safe in Bomad!
